In light of the fact that this week we have an event with August, a sustainable period brand, let's take a look at PERIOD. "PERIOD. is a global youth-fueled nonprofit that strives to eradicate period poverty and stigma through service, education, and advocacy. Through the distribution of menstrual products, promotion of youth leadership, and championing of menstrual equity in policy, PERIOD. aims to center those disproportionately affected by period poverty and support local efforts for menstrual equity."
PERIOD.'s services include distributing menstrual products to people in need, as well as working to eradicate period poverty in its 400 chapters' communities. PERIOD. donates products, in bulk, to 350+ organizations across the country, & around the world that directly serve people who menstruate. In 2021, PERIOD. distributed period products to cover over 3,000,000 menstrual cycles of those most in need.
In addition to its services, PERIOD also provides educational resources for menstruators & allies to "explore intersectional approaches to menstrual equity." It empowers local activists with grassroots training and education to find an approach that is compatible with their community. PERIOD. also has a page on medium.com called "The Rag," where people can write articles to educate menstruating individuals or to tell stories about their personal experiences with menstruation.
Finally, PERIOD. advocates for systematic change through policy & legislation. The menstrual movement is a youth-led movement, where PERIOD. hopes to amplify young activists' voices in their efforts to make systematic changes to combat period poverty. There are plenty of ways to get involved with PERIOD.'s mission! PERIOD. has chapters in over 40 US states & in over 20 different countries! "Chapters work to advance PERIOD’s mission of eradicating period poverty and stigma by creating action plans that employ our three pillars of service, education, and advocacy in their own community!" If you would like to join an existing chapter or register for a new one, click here. If you would rather contribute as an individual, you can download PERIOD.'s toolkit here & host a house party to raise awareness and funds for PERIOD.! Anyone can also submit to The Rag, as mentioned above.
If you are an organization & would like to contribute to PERIOD.'s movement, you can become a service partner, a corporate partner/sponsor, or join PERIOD.'s "Workplace Champions" group. To learn more, click here :)
I had no idea about such an organization... it reminded me of a non-profit in India that was building bathrooms in all those remote villages, just to give girls a place of privacy to deal with the most basic necessities, that they simply had not had...
If men menstruated, it would be a national holiday. Just like heart disease got fed funding long before breast cancer did. Bc the "individuals" who get breast cancer, just like those who menstruate, are predominantly Female - and socially conditioned to be embarrassed to talk about it. Thank you PERIOD. & ProjectWHY for explicitly focusing on a Biological FACT that affects (directly or not) the Majority of the human population, PERIOD.
It is interesting and amazing to learn about ALL of the services and charities actually available for so many needs. Great job Arielle/ProjectWHY!
Oh my goodness!! I had no idea that there was such a huge and generous charity such as PERIOD. that dealt specifically with menstruation problems, needs, and poverty!
